Many councils in the region are getting paid rent by mobile phone companies for sites to put up phone masts.
York City Council is one of the authorities that have placed the mobile phone masts on the sites of schools. There are two at Huntington School and one at Millthorpe School and one at the swimming pool at Edmund Wilson.
A spoke person for the City of York Council said: “When requests had come forward in the past they had approached the governing body of the school in question and asked for views.
“The application only goes forward with their approval. Any income from the siting of the mast goes to the school in question.”
In York the companies paying rental for masts are Orange, T Mobile and Vodaphone, earning a total income of £33,217.
The Orange mobile company rent sites from Parliament Street, Huntington School and Edmund Wilson Swimming Pool. Vodaphone also rent sites on the Museum Street council offices, Millthorpe School and T-Mobile at Huntington School.
The mobile phone companies paying the most in Leeds are, Orange at £140,000, Vodaphone £114,00 and T-Mobile £68,000. Also including O2 at £42,500, Hutchinson -£32,000, Crown Castle - £9000 and Arquiva paying £4,500.
Thirty-eight of the masts are in residential areas and one is on South point offices in Hunslet. Total amount for Leeds adds up to £410,000 annually in rental of sites.
In Hull the companies paying the most in rent for sites for their masts are, Hutchinson 3G, Vodaphone, orange and O2. Also included in this list is T-Mobile, Humberside police Authority and Cable and Wireless with a total income £259,004 for rental.
The companies in Bradford are T-Mobile, Orange and Vodaphone, bringing in a total of £45,958 in rent. The mast locations are at Towngate Wyke, Leaventhorpe Middle School and Land at Cliffe Lane which are rented by Orange. T-Mobile rents sites for their masts at Eccleshill Pool and Central Library. Vodaphone only rents one site at the Central Library on Princes way.
