Melvin Benn, organiser of Leeds and Reading Festival, has confirmed that the 2008 event will feature three top American headliners.
Although the headliners for the August bank holiday event have been booked, Benn is yet to reveal their identity. He said: "Interesting this year is that - probably for the first time, in my memory - we're actually going with three American headliners." However, he was quick to tease expectant fans by adding, "I'm not at liberty to let you know who they are."
This year’s Leeds and Reading Festivals – once known as the Carling Weekend – will no longer have a sponsor in their title. Mr Benn is not thought to be looking for another backer to replace the beer giant, he said: "I wanted it to be - as I'm sure fans wanted it to be - slightly less corporate. I wanted to reclaim the name Reading Festival and the name Leeds Festival. I wanted them to return to their roots."
Benn has also revealed his wishes to make Leeds and Reading Festival more environmentally friendly, particularly due to his achievements running the Latitude Festival in Suffolk. "Latitude won the first ever award for the most green festival. All of the bars at Latitude were made from reclaimed wood," he said.
In addition to using reclaimed wood bars, Benn also encouraged festival-goers to recycle at Latitude and the Leeds and Reading Festivals by introducing a deposit-led scheme for beer glasses. Benn explains: "At Reading and Leeds we put a 10p deposit on all the paper cups that we sold all the pints in. We had a 96% return rate on those paper cups."
The full line-up for the Leeds Festival will be announced later in the year. For the latest up-to-date information on this event, please visit the official Leeds Festival website.
