Talented Architects Shape Eastgate

Six top architecture firms have been drafted in to help with the regeneration of the Eastgate area in Leeds.

All the firms involved have helped to create and design in cities as far a field and diverse as Dallas, Budapest and Tokyo.

Heatherwick Studio based in London, created the impressive store for designer label Longchamps. The new store La Maison Unique was opened in New York City.

Los Angeles-based Jerde Partnership who is also one of the chosen firms who designed the famous Bellagio hotel and casino.

Another of the architecture firms’ involved is the John McAslan and Partners. Who are renowned for their restoration work on buildings that are situated in the Leeds Eastgate redevelopment.

The Edinburgh based Gross Max Company are respected landscapers, who have beautifully landscaped the grounds around the London’s Royal Festival Hall.

Benoy is based in Nottinghamshire and has been involved with projects such as The Blue Water shopping complex in Kent and the Birmingham Bullring.

The company ACME Space will be in charge of the design of the new John Lewis store.

The permission to go ahead was granted last year for the outline planning of the project with construction starting at the beginning of next year.

The managing director for UK based development at Hammerson, said: “This is possibly the most creative architectural team that has been formed to take forward a city centre regeneration project of this scale.”

The regeneration project at the Eastgate site also includes Vicar Lane, New York Street, St Peter’s Street, George Street and Harewood Street.

The entire scheme covers 25 acres, including 600 new homes, over a hundred retail stores. This also includes new department stores for Marks and Spencers and John Lewis.

The project is expected to take eight years to develop with completion due in 2012.
