Storm Leaves Manchester in Chaos

After been battered by the storms, Manchester is expecting some a lull in the gales that have been creating chaos.

The winds are due to drop down from 80 mph to between 30-40mph.

The M6 was closed on 12th March due to trees being blown down and after damage had been caused to property.

The M6 at Thelwall viaduct was closed at 4am, due to three lorries overturning. The lorries overturned trying to cross the bridge, regardless of being warned of the risk from the high winds.

Many trees were blown over in the gales causing mayhem for householders and drivers. People were affected in Warsop Avenue in Sharston, Broom lane in higher Broughton, Salford and Reddish Road in South Reddish. Residents were blocked in when fallen trees came down before 7am.

On Manchester Road in Carrington a roof of a council depot crashed onto car. The roof measuring 320ft by 100ft smashed onto the roof of a Mini, which made the woman drive into a lamppost.

The driver was lucky to escape with no serious injuries, but was left shaken. The £10,000 Mini was written off in the accident and the driver suffered a sore neck.

The account manager said: “A gust of wind came up and I could see debris flying across the road. The next thing, something massive and black just hit the passenger side of the car.

“I swerved around and hit a lamp-post and pushed it over.”

In Failsworth, the gable end of a house was blown down in the storm. The gable struck the neighbours car writing it off. The house on the junction of poplar Street and Jackson Street is waiting to get an assessment of the damage caused to the house.

Fire crews were called to deal with such problems as, a satellite that had got blown away and dislodged brickwork. And a chimneystack had fallen through the roof of a house in Oaklands Road, Kersal.
