Manchester Waves Goodbye to Vera

One of Coronation Street’s most beloved actresses is due to leave the Manchester soap due to ill health.

Liz Dawn, 68, has played the role of Vera Duckworth on the street since 1964. However, an ongoing battle with emphysema has prompted her to retire.

Vera’s exit from the soap signals the end of one Britain’s top soap couples. Vera endured a stormy relationship with husband Jack and often subjected him to a severe tongue-lashing. However, despite their troubles, the couple were clearly in love and had been planning to retire to Blackpool together prior to Vera’s untimely death.

Jack and Vera got into a variety of different scrapes together, most notably during a brief stint as landlords of the Rovers Return pub. They also had a son, Terry, although he frequently misbehaved and was a constant source of heartache for his mother and father, particularly when he sold their only grandchild, Tommy.

Bill, who has played Liz’s onscreen husband for many years, paid tribute to the “wonderful woman.” He said: “I have worked with her for 29 years and we have never had a cross word. She only left a few weeks ago but I already miss walking on set and seeing her there and I miss working with her – we all do.”
The details surrounding Vera’s death are surrounded by secrecy, although it is thought that three different endings have been filmed. Liz found filming her final scenes a challenge, but she believes that viewers will be in for a treat. She said: "It was very emotional filming Vera's death scenes but I do think it was the right decision for the character."

Despite leaving the soap, Liz remains a firm fan of The Street. She said: "I have had 33 marvellous years in Coronation Street and will miss everyone very much.”
