Manchester United Remembers Busby Babes

Manchester United have said that they will stick by their plans to honour the 50th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster with a minute’s silence. Their announcement follows a request from the Manchester City Supporters Club to mark the occasion with a minute’s applause prior to the Manchester derby at Old Trafford on 10th February.

Kevin Parker, Manchester City Supporters’ Club spokesperson, made the request after fearing that disrespectful visiting fans could easily ruin a minute’s silence. He said: "Being a Manchester City fan and living in the city of Manchester all my life, I know the rivalry between these two football clubs. We are concerned as an organisation that it will only take one of those idiots to decide to shout something stupid and then the whole situation has been spoilt forever."

However, Phil Townsend, Manchester United spokesperson, said that the team would not allow this risk to change their plans. He said: "It's a solemn event. We don't think applause is the best way to commemorate the death of 23 people."

The Munich Air Disaster occurred on 6th February 1958 when a plane carrying the Manchester United team was attempting to take off in poor conditions after a European Cup game against Red Star Belgrade. Eight Manchester United footballers and former Manchester City goalkeeper Frank Swift were among those who died in the crash.

Both Manchester United and Manchester City plan to wear commemorative kits on the day of the Manchester derby. Manchester United’s team will be wearing a replica of the 1958 kit, which will be devoid of the players' names or shirt numbers, and Manchester City's kit will feature a black ribbon, as well as no sponsor branding.

In order to ensure that their supporters cause minimum fuss during the silence, Manchester City have written to fans with tickets for the derby to ask them to show respect.
