Manchester Discovers the Weird World of the Body

Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry is about to host one of its most controversial exhibitions yet. Body Worlds 4 is a unique exhibition by Dr Gunther Von Hagens, which shows visitors the most intimate workings of the human body.

As the exhibition uses real human bodies, it is certainly not for the faint hearted. Body Worlds 4 will present more that 200 human specimens, including some whole body specimens that have been preserved using the process of Plastination. Plastination is Dr Von Hagens' groundbreaking method of preventing decomposition of the body, which allows the body to be preserved after death for medical study.

Dr Von Hagens invented Plastination in 1977, and this exhibition will showcase the very latest techniques, which are constantly under development at Dr Von Hagens' Institute for Plastination, in Heidelburg, Germany.

The exhibits on display at Body Worlds 4 are essential viewing; there is no better way to gain an authentic look inside the human body. As Dr Von Hagens ensures that his exhibits document the impact of disease on the human body, as well as the body's many physical changes, this exhibition really does offer a wonderful opportunity to learn about our anatomy.

In addition to genuine human exhibits, Body Worlds 4 will also feature a varied programme of lectures and workshops, which will discuss various issues surrounding the exhibition, including healthy living, and the ethical implications of Plastination.

Although the Museum of Science of Industry is the first venue to exhibit Body Worlds 4, previous Body Worlds exhibitions have been held in 45 cities worldwide and attracted around 25 million visitors. The original Body Worlds exhibition visited London in 2002 and 2003, although the specimens exhibited in Body Worlds 4 are on display for the first time in the UK.

Body Worlds 4 opens at the Museum of Science and Industry on 22nd February 2008 and runs until the 29th June.
