L.S Lowry was well known for he sketching on serviettes, envelopes and any other scrap of paper available to him if he had no sketchbook.
Some of these pieces are now worth thousands of pounds, with an example of his artwork on display at the Sunderland Marriott Hotel (Formerly the Seaburn Hotel).
L.S Lowry did not gain any recognition or respect for his work until a year after his mother’s death.
He had stated many times that this was one of his greatest regrets as he wished that his mother had been alive to witness his success as an artist.
Laurence Stephen Lowry grew up being aware that he was a disappointment to mother.
It was well known that his mother was greatly disappointed with the birth of her son as she yearned to have a daughter like her sister, who had had three.
This led to him constantly trying to gain respect and approval from his mother.
However his father was very affectionate towards him and gave him plenty of attention, but Lowry still craved the approval of his mother for the rest of his life.
L.S Lowry mother constantly used illness to dominate her son’s life, as well as a means to gain attention and obedience from her husband.
There were high expectations for Lowry to be academical as both his parents very intelligent. Also the fact that his mother was formerly a teacher, he was expected to do exceptionally well school.
However it was said that Lowry was not academically minded and he also had very few friends at school.
After leaving school he enrolled at Salford School of Art, where he discovered his interest in industrial landscapes and started to establish his unique style of painting.
L.S Lowry was appointed as the Official Artist for the Queen Elizabeth II coronation in 1953.
