Following a price rise announced today, Leeds United supporters will have to fork out more than ever to see their favourite team play next season.
The hike in prices sees the cost of an adult season ticket rise 10 per cent for existing holders who renew their tickets for the 2008-09 season before 1st March. However, fans that renew their tickets between 2nd March and 28th April will be faced by an even bigger increase of 20 per cent.
Similarly, new ticket holders who choose to buy full-priced season tickets before 28th April will pay almost 20 per cent more than they would have done under current ticket prices. Although no details are yet available on the prices after 28th April, it is expected that they will also be subject to an increase.
Leeds United chief executive Shaun Harvey said that fans that purchased their new season tickets early would be helping the team out. He said: "Season ticket income is exceptionally valuable to the club and its early receipt allows us to plan for the 2008-09 season. We are then able to make an early approach to those players we believe can improve the playing squad."
Prior to this price increase, Leeds had cut the cost of their tickets. As a result, this season - their first played in the third tier of English football – had helped to attract some substantial crowds to Elland Road. In fact, with an average attendance of just over 27,500 people per game, Leeds boasted a larger crowd than many premiership teams.
Last season, high ticket prices were blamed for disappointing crowds at Elland Road. During this period, there were 11 league games that were attended by fewer than 20,000 people. If the price increases announced today are to go ahead for next season, it is feared that attendance at Elland Road will plummet once more.
