The murderer of a 14-year-old Leeds schoolgirl has been labelled “an extremely dangerous sexual predator” and sentenced to serve at least 35 years for his crime.
Michael Clark, 40, was sentenced to life for the murder of Polish Zuzanna Zommer in Leeds last year at a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court. Polish Zommer had only been in Leeds for two months before Clark, a convicted rapist, killed her in a violent attack at her own home.
Zommer’s parents, who were out looking for work in Leeds at the time of their daughter’s murder, later found her body with a slit throat and fractured skull. The schoolgirl had also been sexually assaulted.
During the case, the court heard how Clark, a solvent abuser, had befriended the Zommer family who lived on his street. However, Clark's behaviour soon began to worry Zuzanna’s father and he had a right to be concerned; Clark had a history of violent sexual offences.
Clark initially told the police that he was in a post office collecting benefits at the time of the murder, but officers later managed to disprove it.
While sentencing Clark, the judge, Mr Justice King, said: “No words of mine could express the grief, distress and profound sense of loss caused by your actions to the Zommer family. These were truly wicked acts. You have shown no remorse. Your victim was particularly vulnerable. She was 14. Your attack was particularly brutal and frenzied.”
Det Supt Bill Shackleton, from West Yorkshire Police, made a statement after the hearing. He said, “The Zommer family had only been in England for a few weeks when Zuzanna was brutally murdered by Michael Clark. Clark has a history of violent sexual offences as was heard during the trial. He is without doubt an extremely dangerous sexual predator. The sentence he received today will ensure that he will no longer present a danger to the public.”
