Kaiser Chiefs Gig in Jeopardy

The Kaiser Chiefs are waiting to hear the final decision on whether their 24th May 2008 homecoming gig in Leeds will go ahead.

Leeds City Council has postponed the decision for a further month. Any decision to give the go ahead for the gig at Elland Road will be made at that time.

A licence application to stage a 30,000-capacity show was submitted by concert promoter Futuresounds. A meeting was held with council officials present, but the final decision to grant the licence has not been made.

The rescheduled meeting is to be held by the Council Licensing Committee on Wednesday April 2nd.

The sold-out gig will then have less than two months to put its final plans into action.

It has been revealed that one main priority for the council is the safety of the general public at Elland Road. Leeds City Council have raised concerns involving the use of Elland Road’s East Stand and have yet to resolve issue.

A spokesperson for the authority stated that discussions on the suitability of the East Stand were on going.

The chief executive of Leeds United football club has stressed that all safety requirements for sporting fixtures at the East Stand have been fulfilled.

However the concern is that concert crowds puts a different kind of strain on the East Stand than fans at a football match. Furthermore a concert of such proportion has not been held at Elland Road since 1991.

It was added that the committee’s decision had also been postponed, to enable Futuresound more time to collect all the information that is required for the meeting.

Leeds-based Futuresound said that they were “100 per cent confident” that the Kaiser Chiefs will perform at Elland Road on the 24th May.

The final decision will be addressed at the 2nd April Council Licensing Committee meetings.
