For the past two years people have been illegally dumping rubbish in the back alley of an 82-year-old woman’s home in York City.
The alley on Keller Avenue is often littered with broken glass, dead televisions and couches. People are also dumping cushions and other household rubbish behind the 500 block at Lamour Street.
The woman has now been ordered by the council to clean the up the alley at the back of her property or else she will be fined.
However building code official Donald Raymond said: “ It was clear the woman had not dumped the carpet roll and other trash behind her home.”
Mr Raymond then got the public works department to agree to an arrangement of where they will remove the dumped rubbish free of charge.
He has also asked for the local police force to keep an eye on the dumping problem in the area and to try and find out who is responsible.
The city’s Permits Department have put into place a procedure, were they will work with the residents to get the rubbish that has been dumped cleaned up.
However the department only deals with a few illegal-dumping problems a year, but the problem seems to be on the increase in certain areas in York City.
The illegal dumping is an on going issue for residents and they are calling for the council to address the problems they face.
With this affecting other areas in York, homeowner are getting increasingly frustrated about getting the blame for the mess that has been created by others.
A community development director said: “ The city has tried to make it easy for people to keep their properties clean by providing free pickup of oversize items if they call the city to make arrangements.”
But this still does not go far enough to protect residents from have illegal dumping of rubbish on their property.
