Hundreds of Animals Abandoned in Leeds

Cases of cruelty to animals have continued to rise in just the first four months of 2008.

The RSPCA have already rescued over 700 abandoned animals across the region.

Last year 30,000 abused animals were from the north of England and shockingly these figures are set to rise for 2008.

The recently revealed figures showed that the 30,000 wild, exotic, farm and domestic animals were badly.

The north regional superintendent said, 'The RSPCA works around the clock to rescue thousands of animals every year and 2007 was no exception.

'We want people to spare a thought for the many thousands of animals needing the RSPCA's help each year and in particular we want anyone thinking about getting a pet to consider the responsibility they are taking on before doing so.'

The RSPCA highlighted some of the cases of animal abandonment in the Leeds and West Yorkshire region.

A litter of five puppies were discovered by a member of the public on Field Head Lane.

The puppies were found playing in a field and it was obvious that they had been dumped.

An RSPCA inspector said, 'It's shocking that anyone could abandon any animal in this way, especially such young puppies.

'They were all in good physical condition, which suggested that they had once belonged to someone.

"It is probable that they were deliberately left by the footpath. Had we not have been contacted so early, the puppies could have come to all sorts of harm.'

Another case last year involved a dog being thrown out of a car and dumped in a lay-by along the M621.

And a nine-week old German Shepherd puppy was also found dumped on Fernfield Terrace in Halifax.

Anyone found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal faces six months in prison and a £20,000 fine.
