Film Bosses Search for Leeds United Stars

Budding actors and Leeds United fans are being offered the chance of a lifetime by film bosses. People are being sought to play some Leeds United legends from the 1970s in a new £10 million film, The Damned Utd, which starts filming later this month.

The Damned Utd, which is being adapted from a popular novel by Yorkshire-born novelist David Pearce, deals with Brian Clough's infamous 44-day stint as the manager of Leeds United. The novel tells readers how Clough was famously fired from Leeds United in 1974 after failing to win over his team, who were still loyal to their previous manager Don Revie.

The film’s producers have already managed to cast some of the film’s key characters and a number of established actors are lined up to take part in the project. Indeed, the part of Brian Clough's popular predecessor Don Revie is being played by Colm Meaney, an actor who is best known for his appearances in Star Trek’s Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. Michael Sheen, who starred as Kenneth Williams in the BBC drama Fantabulosa! and Tony Blair in the Oscar-nominated film The Queen, will play the lead role of Brian Clough. Other cast members are thought to include the highly respected actors Jim Broadbent and Timothy Spall.

However, the production team are now searching for people to play the other members of the 1970s Leeds United squad. Leeds-based football coach Simon Clifford, who has been lined up to cast the rest of the team, said that football skills are far more important than acting skills. He said: "I'm looking for lads who have played at Northern Counties East or Unibond league level or higher. They'll have to look something like their characters as well, we need that physical resemblance. These are non-speaking parts, although the people we pick will obviously have to react to what the actors are doing around them."

Auditions will be in the form of soccer trials and will take place at the home ground of Garforth Town in east Leeds between 10am and 6pm on Wednesday. For more information or to book a place on the trial, e-mail g.williams@icfds.com or ring 0113 287 7145.

At the trial, Clifford is also hoping to find members of the other teams that will feature in the film, including Derby County, Liverpool and Manchester City.
