Facebook Water Fight Ruins Leeds Gardens

A huge water fight that was organised via the Facebook social networking site has caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to a prized public garden in Leeds.

Eyewitnesses said that there were around 350 people involved in the fight and many of them were armed with buckets and water pistols. Pictures and videos of the water fight, which also depict people damaging the Millennium Square Gardens have been posted on Facebook and on the YouTube video website.

During the water fight, the city council said that lots of damage was done to the gardens, which won a bronze medal at the 2004 Chelsea Flower Show for their centrepiece, which represents the city's long-standing partnership with Nelson Mandela and Durban, his hometown. The damage was thought to include trampled plants, ripped up turf and vandalism to water features, which were emptied and filled with foam.

John Procter, Leed’s City Council’s executive member for leisure, said that his staff were “distraught” when they saw that the water fight had destroyed years of hard work. He said: “Our parks staff were distraught when they discovered the wreckage. Frankly I'm appalled at the total disregard for people's ongoing enjoyment of this beautiful city centre oasis. To destroy years of careful cultivation for a couple of hours of so-called fun is unforgivable.” However, he said that the council would be “pulling out all the stops to make sure everything is put right.”

Police are now thought to be examining CCTV footage of the event in order to identify the culprits.
